A rotary intersection is actually an endless road with an inner roadside which is often not accessible. The traffic circle Stolwijkersluis near the city of Gouda (Utrecht) takes up a lot of space and is used extensively. Most traffic on the circle doesn't have to slow down much and is able to regain a certain high speed. Constant movement of cars entering and leaving dominates the traffic circle. I have designed an art piece for this traffic circle where I focus the attention of the car driver on this artwork. In the inner circle I have constructed a roller coaster using a crash barrier. The art piece is placed as a normal crash barrier would be to provide protection while the flowing movement reminds one also of the liveliness of the city, which a fairground attraction often brings about. On the traffic circle many bollards and other signs are competing visually with this artwork. It is therefore that I chose to use an everyday object as the crash barrier to create a work of art. The known form will thus integrate with all the other recognisable signs, just like the inevitable traffic signs with arrows. These signs, which show white arrows that are chasing each other, will acquire an extra significance as they are indirectly referring to the roller coaster art piece. They indicate a looping and furthermore accentuate the endless form of the figure eight as an intrinsic part of the rollercoaster.
